Sitting humbly in the valley below and across from the over-sized Upper St. Clair Recreation Center on Mayview Road, Wingfield Pines has been damaged and polluted since the 40's when the area was strip-mined for coal.
Since 2009 when efforts to clean up the abandoned mine drainage were put into motion, the area functions now as a natural filtration system for the mine drainage. And the polluted water from the mines now runs cleanly back into the Chartiers Creek. (Let's not make that mistake again, please.)
On this walk, I will explain to anyone who hasn't been here before just how the filtration system is put to use, and we will (as always!) explore which plants and wildlife are native to this neck of the woods.
Depending on how many people attend and how many people are already at the park, some of us may need to park a little further, at the parking lot for the recreation center. This is located up another hill, fyi. (There are several parking lots at the rec center.)
There is a really lovely boardwalk near the end of the property, and the trail (except for the hill that we park on top of) is all very flat.
Please leave a comment or e-mail me with any questions! Hope to see a good turn-out for this one, as this has become quite a valuable section of land.
And there is much to learn from it!
Green Blessings!
